$4 for 3 lip balm samples is really a steal. Especially when the list of available flavors is as vast as that provided by Country Heart Gifts. This quaint little Etsy store has one of the most comprehensive flavor lists ever. You can think it, it's more than likely there.
These come in their own little plastic bags with information card and they little pots are adorable. They are 2 mL, small, but there is enough for some solid usage. It is an ideal sample size I would argue. The only down side to these little pots is their size. It's ironic. Easy to carry but when you go to apply it is tough to get your finger in there to get a good amount. After a few tries, I've realized the best way to go is to use a lip gloss brush as an applicator. It's extra work but it makes application a lot easier and they balm is soft enough for the brush to pick up but hard enough to not get all goopy.
If you use your finger, you need to be careful. You can get chunks on your finger which transfers to your lips as white and a little bit gunky...not a pleasant feeling.
Out of the amazing flavor listings I selected, Fruit Explosion, Marshmallow Fluff, and Strawberries Champangne (no alcohol is actually used so its okay my fellow sXe peeps!) As a little bonus, I received an extra sample of Buttery Toffee Crunch.
The Fruit Explosion smells like tuttifutti. When you put it on it doesn't really taste as refreshingly fruity as you would think. It tastes a lot like Juicy Fruit, the gum. Actually if I could rename this lip balm I would call it "Juicy Fruit."
The Marshmallow Fluff smells just like Fluff and when you put it on it tastes like the marshmallows from Lucky Charms. This was by FAR my favorite flavor. It was adequately named, and perfectly sweetened.
Strawberry Champagne smells like the Victoria's Secret spray...and it sadly tastes the same. Have you ever sprayed your perfume, walked through it, and got a little in your mouth and you're like "UGH!"? That's the flavor of this. Extremely unpleasant. I let my mother try this one out just to make sure it wasn't my anti-alcohol brain sabotaging this review, but she concurred that it did taste like liquid soap. This was terrible, but I think it lends itself to show that my taste matches my life style belief. I hate mojito flavoring (I actually get sick) and now this Champagne balm upset my stomach. I guess I would not recommend alcohol related flavors for lip balm. Well, I don't recommend alcohol period.
The Buttery Toffee Crunch was a real surprise and treat. I tend to stray from these flavors, much like chocolate, because I feel that they are just too tough to copy. This smells amazing. I'm not too sure it's so true to buttery toffee crunch but it smells like Tim Horton's English Toffee cappuccino. It tastes like toffee, for sure. Just like the toffee my grandparent's used to have in their house. You have to love old people candy. This would be my second favorite sample that I received.
These balms are lip-licking good, which hurts them in their durability. They don't last long. They go on a bit waxy, but you can tell that it absorbs. You do get an initial feeling of smooth and supple lips, but you can lick it or drink it away rather fast.
Overall, this lip balm is not that fantastic. For being a beeswax based lip balm, I don't think their is a good enough balance with that and the oils in it. The flavoring was also a big issue for me. I would buy the Marshmallow Fluff lip balm, but that would be it. The difficulty in application, the texture and feel of the balm, and it's durability really detracts from this potentially great balm. It has the right ingredients, I just do not feel this homemade balm stands up to others I have reviewed with similar ingredients.
